The small town is quite rightly called uno dei borghi più belli d'Italia. Torre Normanna, the town gate from the times of Norman rule, marks the entrance to the historic center with its mostly oriental-style houses, picturesque courtyards full of nooks and crannies and external staircases connecting the various floors of the houses.
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in the heart of the Old Town is where people like to meet for an aperitif in the evening.
Culinary specialties at Cisternino are the so-called bombette, delicious slices of meat, either plain or stuffed with the regional cheese Caciocavallo.
Cisternino today is widely regarded as a "mecca for gourmets".
Cisternino was founded by the Messapians, the original inhabitants of Apulia.
During the Middle Ages, a large number of monks from the oriental order of the Basilians came to this place to escape persecution in the Byzantine Empire. Their influence on the townscape in the time following was vital.
The Romanic church of San Nicola di Parara was built upon the remains on a Basilian crypt.
There are absolutely marvelous beaches at Pilone 1 and 2 on the Adriatic coast, only 15 km from Cisternino. A long sandy beach as well as bars and restaurants await you at bathing resort Torre Canne, which is 15 km off, too.
